Program Description

The Genesis program for students in Grades 10-12. It is an interagency program, partnering with PLEA. The Genesis program addresses the needs of students who have an extended history of non-engagement in school. It is a self-paced program designed to meet the academic, vocational, personal, and social needs of each student. Through this partnership, the Genesis program offers multiple options for students to reach their personal and academic goals with continued opportunities for success. The Genesis program offers two on-site classrooms, as well as an outreach component, each of which comes with one VSB teacher and one PLEA youth support worker.

Depending on student goals and circumstances, students are provided with the option to work toward either a Dogwood Diploma or an Adult Dogwood Diploma. All students at the Genesis program have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), which is a ministry working document that is intended to help achieve their goals. The IEP outlines and provides additional supports, adaptations, and goals that are personalized for each student to help support their success. This process involves the student, caregiver, various stakeholders, and program staff. Adaptations and modifications are made where necessary to meet the needs of the students. In addition to the academic component, students may be engaged in work experience, recreation, social, and life skills activities. Support plans are established to meet the needs of the students as they progress into adulthood.

Referral Process

Referrals for inter-agency programs require a MCFD Social Worker or Youth Justice referral; school staff do not have direct access to refer students to these programs. 

Referrals are accepted on an on-going basis and reviewed by a MCFD/VSB screening committee to determine eligibility, placement, and priority.
