Program Description

Nova is a senior outreach and resource program where staff connect with students in the community and at the Nova resource center. The program offers core academic courses in Grades 10-12, in addition to elective courses such as PE, Art, Photography, Music, and Foods. Programming is flexible and can occur at Nova (located in the B-wing of Tupper Secondary), a variety of community locations (e.g. parks, cafes, or libraries), and through outreach with individual students.

Academic programming consists of independent course work based on the student's individual needs and course requirements. Students earn elective credits through group activities and field studies, where they can socialize with classmates and build interpersonal connections. Adaptations are made where necessary to meet the needs of the students. Progress in Core and Curricular Competencies may also be managed through an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Students meeting attendance and engagement criteria may be referred to a mainstream school or alternate program. Those attending in their Grade 12 year may also graduate from Nova with a Dogwood or Adult Dogwood Diploma.

Minimum Engagement Expectations

• Student will contact school staff weekly (eg. text/email).
• Student will meet staff/attend programming at least 2x / month.
• Caregivers meet with school staff, respond to emails/texts/consent forms as needed.
• Student must maintain active engagement in at least one course.
• Placements will be reviewed each semester.

Referral Process

The student’s current VSB case manager or administrator can submit the application found here. 

All referrals are reviewed to determine program suitability relative to individual student needs. Successful applicants will be contacted by the Program Teacher or Youth and Family Worker to arrange an intake meeting with the student and their caregiver.
