Program Description

Sunrise is a Grade 8 and 9 school-based Alternative Program that promotes critical and creative thinking, artistic expression, and a commitment to diversity and social justice. Along with core academic subjects, Sunrise emphasizes a strong focus on students’ health & wellness to develop a safe and welcoming classroom community. Sunrise engages students in learning through theme-based, cross-curricular instruction.

Program staff work to build strong and trusting relationships with students and to provide a safe, supportive, and creative educational environment. Our intention is to reengage each student in their own educational future, build confidence and self-esteem, and give students a sense of belonging and community.

Sunrise is designed primarily for students who have had some difficulty in their regular classroom situation and require a more supportive transition from elementary to secondary school. These students are often in need of a smaller class setting and benefit from social-emotional support. Student progress is managed through the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) process, which involves the student, the parent/guardian, and program staff. Adaptations are made where necessary to meet the needs of the students. Staff meet monthly with students to discuss progress in their course work and education goals. 

After completing their Grade 9 year, students may return to their neighbourhood school, apply to another district program, or apply cross-boundary to an out of catchment school.

Referral Process

The student’s current VSB case manager or administrator can submit the application found here. 

All referrals are reviewed to determine program suitability relative to individual student needs. Successful applicants will be contacted by the Program Teacher or Youth and Family Worker to arrange an intake meeting with the student and their caregiver.
