BC Children’s Hospital - Eating Disorders School Program
Program Objectives
The objective of the Eating Disorders Provincial Resource Program is to provide educational support for patients admitted into the Provincial Specialized Eating Disorders Programs at BC Children’s Hospital. There are (3) programs; an Inpatient Program, a Day Treatment Program and an Outpatient Program. The Eating Disorders teachers establish and maintain communication between and among the student, family, school of record, and medical teams regarding the student’s academic progress, functioning ability, and identified supports. The Eating Disorders PRP supports the engagement and completion of the student’s academic plan in a way that is specific to their needs and abilities.
Referral Process
Youth are admitted following a referral from a medical or healthcare professional. Criterion for participation in the School Program is determined by the medical team based on medical stability and the student’s ability to cope and engage in learning. As a tertiary level treatment program, BC Children’s Hospital Eating Disorder Clinic and School Program provides service to students from BC, Yukon, and at times, other provinces.
Discharge and Transition Planning
Criteria for discharge from academic service and support is determined in collaboration with the medical team, while taking into consideration the student’s medical stability, their readiness to engage in learning, and ensuring that there is a detailed transition plan in place. Once students are ready to transition to school, the Eating Disorders PRP provides the student, their family, and the school of record with the scaffolding and support needed for the student to successfully return to the school context. An Educational Discharge Summary that outlines academic, social, and emotional recommendations is provided to schools and/or community teams to support a successful transition from the program.
