Unit 1 – Introduction to Visual Arts

In this unit, we will focus on what is known as the visual and decorative arts; become familiar with the concept of art movements and periods; and consider why we study art.

 Unit Two: The Elements and Principles of Art 

In this unit we will explore some of the aspects that help make great art great. We’ll learn more about the basic building blocks of artwork.

Unit Three: Critiquing Art

Art critiques can help us better understand artwork. In this unit we will learn more about art critiques, including why we do art critiques and how context can influence them.

Unit Four: Prehistoric Art

We’ll learn more about prehistoric art which represents the earliest human art, including cave paintings, sculptures and megaliths.

Unit Five: Ancient Art

We will focus on three of the ancient cultures from the Mediterranean and Near East including the Sumerians, Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece.

 Unit Six: Ancient Roman, Early Christian and Medieval Art 

In this unit, we will learn about the architecture of these periods, as well as some of the other types of art that were produced.

Unit Seven: The Renaissance

Pieces and techniques developed during this time period helped form the foundation of the Western art we know today.

Unit Eight: Art of the Americas

We will focus on pre-Columbian art in the Americas, looking at art from the Olmec, Maya, Aztec and Inca cultures as well as are created in North America such as beadwork, basket art, and totem poles.

Unit Nine: African and Oceanic Art

Africa is home to the earliest humans and some of the earliest known art. We explore more about the culture and characteristics of African and Oceanic art.

 Unit Ten: From the Baroque to the Romantics 

We will consider four of the main art periods and styles that can after the Renaissance, including Baroque, rococo, neoclassical and Romantic art.

 Unit Eleven: Realism to Post Modernism 1860’s -1970’s 

Art mirrors its time. The movements in this unit all rebelled against the established conventions which came before. The quickening rate at which these movements emerged reflects the ever-accelerating pace of life, of increased industrialization, urbanization and communication - in short, the emergence of the modern world. In this unit we will examine Realism, photography, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and Modern art.
